What is Constipation?
Constipation causes fewer bowel movements or lots of problems using the bathroom. If you’ve ever sat in the bathroom and struggled with hard, dry stool, then you know how this feels.
Some people have chronic constipation, and their difficulties can last for several weeks or more.
Mojgan Forootan, MD et al., published a 2018 study titled Chronic Constipation: A review of Literature in the journal, Medicine, which stated that constipation might affect those of a lower economic status at higher rates.
It may include a lack of access to high-quality foods, less exercise, and higher stress levels.
This same study also noted that approximately 16% of the global adult population suffers from constipation. 33.5% of these cases are attributed to adults who are 60+ years of age.
Nearly half of us have suffered from occasional constipation, but 1 out of 5 of us deal with chronic constipation.
How does constipation affect daily life?

Bloating and discomfort are miserable, but when it’s constant, there can be lots of pain, difficulty having sex, anxiety, depression, and fatigue.
Chronic Constipation symptoms you should know
- Fewer than three bowel movements a week.
- Hard, lumpy stools.
- Feeling backed up.
- Still feeling full after a bowel movement.
- Needing assistance emptying the rectum.
If two or more of these symptoms have afflicted you for three months, you may be troubled with chronic constipation.
Can Newborns have Constipation?
Yes, they can, but it’s rarer than you think when breastfeeding, newborns may not have a bowel movement for a week. This is normal. When you notice your baby seems uncomfortable, struggles to go, has hard stools that may or may not have blood, or doesn’t poop at all in 5 to 10 days, then you should consider constipation.
What Causes Constipation?
Occasional constipation occurs when waste or stool doesn’t move quickly enough through the digestive tract. This can make you feel uncomfortable because it blocks waste from leaving your body.
So, you may feel like you have to use the bathroom all day. When this happens, the stool becomes hard and dry.

Certain diseases or conditions may cause hormonal imbalances and trigger chronic constipation, including:
- Overactive parathyroid gland
- Underactive thyroid
- An increased chance of chronic constipation may be triggered by:
- Advancing age
- Consuming a diet low in fiber
- Limited exercise
- Specific medication such as antidepressants, sedatives, narcotics or blood pressure medication
- Mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, or an eating disorder.
What happens if you ignore chronic constipation?
There are many complications associated with chronic constipation, including:
- Hemorrhoids (swollen veins in the anus)
- Anal fissures (torn skin in the anus)
- Fecal impaction (stool that is stuck in the body)
- Rectal prolapse (intestine protruding from the anus).
These complications are often caused by straining to have a bowel movement.
Other rare causes such as abdominal cancer, anal fissures, colon cancer & rectal cancer could be the one eventually

Natural remedies for constipation
Eat foods high in fiber

Use the bathroom quickly. Pass bowel movements as soon as they felt. There are many ways to do this. For a saltwater flush, put two teaspoons of salt with water before eating in the morning. Eating foods with a lot of water (fruit, watermelon, lettuce).
Always take your time when using the bathroom. This prevents hemorrhoids and stress.
Laxatives There are many different kinds of laxatives, including fiber supplements, stimulants, lubricants, stool softeners, enemas, and suppositories. Each of these works differently to relieve constipation. These medications may be acquired over the counter, but if you are still struggling with constipation, consult with your doctor.
He or she can offer much advice on how to relieve constipation. Laxative Drinks and Imbalances Magnesium Citrate Saline is used to relieve occasional constipation.
